Five championship teams. One celebration. Detroit Catholic Central students, faculty and staff gathered in the gym Thursday, Aug. 20, for a Spring Sports Championship Assembly honoring the Shamrocks' title-winning lacrosse, golf, rugby, baseball and fishing teams from the 2025-26 school year.

The celebration capped a historic run: 10 state championships across athletics, academics and student activities, the school announced earlier this summer.

Athletic Director Aaron Babicz and Principal Mitch Hancock opened the assembly by addressing the student body about what it takes to build championship programs, according to the school.

The program kicked off with the fishing team, and for good reason. Juniors Donnie Periard and Anthony Oliver swept both of Michigan's major competitive bass fishing titles this year: the TBF-SAF Michigan High School State Championship in May and the Michigan Bass Nation Big Bass Youth High School Trail State Championship on Saginaw Bay on Aug. 9. The double represents titles from the state's two main competitive bass fishing organizations, an unprecedented feat for the program.

The fishing team is coached by Paul Miner, a 1986 CC graduate, alongside his son Jack Miner, Class of 2025, a father-son coaching duo.

Head baseball coach Ryan Rogowski also addressed the gym. His squad shut out Rochester Adams 7-0 at Michigan State's McLane Stadium on June 13 to claim the MHSAA Division 1 title, the program's first since 1999, according to the Detroit Free Press. Senior pitcher Micky Laser threw a 79-pitch complete game in the final, while second baseman Bennett Thompson drove the first pitch for a triple despite playing through a torn UCL.

"I chose to wait until the end of the year. Because I wanted to help my team win a state championship like we just did," Thompson told reporters after the June 13 final.

Head lacrosse coach Dave Wilson and rugby captain Caden Krueger rounded out the speakers. The lacrosse team beat Hudsonville 14-10 for its third state title, the golf team captured its third consecutive Division 1 championship, and rugby defeated Rockford for back-to-back titles.

Catholic Central's fall sports schedule picks up quickly. The football team opens its Division 1 title defense Thursday, Aug. 27, at 4 p.m.
