Novi residents are navigating detours and lane closures as the city and county advance tens of millions of dollars in road projects.

The city released Episode 137 of its "Now You Novi" podcast on Wednesday, Sept. 30, walking listeners through how a road project goes from idea to finished pavement. The episode also covers current construction around the city.

Here's what's happening on Novi's roads and what's coming next.

Novi Road reopened

The Novi Road reconstruction between 8 Mile Road and 9 Mile Road, a joint project of the Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) and the cities of Novi and Northville, reopened to traffic on Sept. 2, according to the city's project page. The work added a continuous center left-turn lane and a High-Intensity Activated Crosswalk (HAWK) pedestrian signal north of Galway Drive. Some restoration work remains.

12 Mile Road: two big projects

A major active project is the 12 Mile Road reconstruction from Novi Road to Farmington Road, a two-year, four-stage effort. The Road Commission for Oakland County lists the two-year project at approximately $12.2 million. The 5.5-mile project runs from Novi Road to Farmington Road, with 2026 construction expected to wrap up in late fall. That stretch carries 28,000 to 30,000 vehicles daily. Cadillac Asphalt of Farmington Hills is the contractor. A second phase, from Haggerty Road to Drake Road, is planned for 2027, with the start date still to be announced.

Farther west, the 12 Mile Road widening from Beck Road to Novi Road carries a $35 million price tag. Funded by federal dollars, RCOC, the cities of Novi and Wixom, and Oakland County's Tri-Party Program, site preparation is expected to begin in 2026 with full construction running from 2027 through late 2028.

Lee Begole Drive and neighborhood streets

Work on the Lee Begole Drive Extension began in September. The overall project is designed to eventually connect Crescent Boulevard and Grand River Avenue, providing a more direct route for emergency vehicles. The current phase runs from Crescent Boulevard to just south of the DPW’s northern entrance, with a second phase scheduled for spring 2027 to extend south to a new roundabout at 11 Mile Road. The project is projected to continue through fall 2027.

On neighborhood streets, the city's contractor plans to begin work on Argyle Street and Argyle Court on Oct. 7 as part of the 2026 Neighborhood Roads Program for concrete streets, according to the city's Better Roads Ahead page. Curb replacements in Saratoga Circle are also expected in early October.

What's ahead in 2027

Main Street improvements from Grand River Avenue to Novi Road, covering sidewalks, lighting and pavement, are slated for early spring 2027 in cooperation with the Corridor Improvement Authority.

The RCOC also plans a $2 million roundabout at 9 Mile Road and Napier Road on the Novi/Lyon Township border. The city will install a water main at the intersection this fall, with roundabout construction starting in spring 2027.

State money flowing

Separately, Michigan's Neighborhood Roads Fund sent its first payments on Sept. 14, distributing roughly $171.6 million statewide, as reported by MLive. Oakland County received $11.42 million.

DPW Director Jeff Herczeg previewed the city's 2026 and 2027 road plans in an earlier city-produced video. Construction hours in Novi run Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., per city ordinance.
