Northville's Cabbagetown neighborhood won't get relief from cut-through traffic until October after Wayne County pushed back the reopening of the Eight Mile Road bridge by two months.

The bridge, which carries Eight Mile (also called Base Line Road) over the CSX Railroad between Novi Road and Griswold Street, closed March 2 for a full deck replacement, steel cleaning and coating, and approach work. Wayne County Department of Public Services officials originally targeted an August completion but said utility issues discovered early in the project and weather delays forced the timeline to October, WXYZ reported Monday, Aug. 24.

It's the second schedule slip. The City of Novi's project tracker shows construction was originally planned for 2025 but postponed a full year because of utility relocation coordination and late bid letting.

The official detour sends eastbound traffic south on Beck Road, east on Six Mile Road and north on Haggerty Road, with westbound traffic taking the reverse. But residents say many drivers skip the detour entirely and cut through Cabbagetown's narrow residential streets.

Cabbagetown resident Norm Fankell told WXYZ that large trucks have been barreling through the neighborhood since March.

"I've had trucks so big through here they can't even make the turn," Fankell said.

Fankell also reported a woman struck and knocked out a fire hydrant on his street. Resident Harold Smith said speeding drivers forget they're passing through a neighborhood with children and pets.

Northville Police, according to WXYZ's report, said they have seen the uptick in traffic and responded by increasing enforcement and installing new stop signs at Baseline and Horton roads. Resident Barbara Benton said officers have been monitoring the intersection at Baseline and Novi Street, where drivers frequently blow through the stop sign.

As of a July 8 update on Novi's tracker, the contractor still expected a mid-August reopening. No specific date in October has been announced. Wayne County's road project hotline is available 24 hours at 888-762-3273.
