Northville Public Schools wants to start the 2026-27 school year a full week before Labor Day, and families have one required public hearing to speak up before the state decides whether to allow it.
The district will hold the hearing at 3:30 p.m. July 29, at Old Village School, 405 W. Main St., Northville. A representative from the Michigan Department of Education will participate remotely. The hearing will also be livestreamed on the district's YouTube channel at youtube.com/@northvillepublicschoolsvideo.
Under Michigan law, public schools cannot begin instruction on or before Labor Day without a waiver from the State Superintendent of Public Instruction. Northville is requesting a three-year exemption. The July 29 hearing is the sole required community input step before MDE rules on the application. The school board is not required to attend the hearing, though individual members may choose to be present.
What this means for families
The district's approved 2026-27 calendar, revised June 10, lists August 31, as the first full day of classes. Labor Day falls on September 7. Without the waiver, that start date would violate state law.
Teachers would report even earlier. Professional development days are scheduled for August 25 through August 27, according to the calendar. The last day of classes is set for June 10, 2027, a half-day.
The district has not publicly stated which eligibility criterion it is invoking in its waiver application. Under state guidelines, qualifying programs include year-round or "balanced calendar" schools that replace a long summer break with shorter, more frequent breaks, or districts offering extended summer learning options free of charge to all students.
How to participate
Residents can attend in person at Old Village School or watch the livestream. No advance registration is mentioned in the district's public notice, posted July 16.
The district has not announced a timeline for when MDE will issue its decision after the hearing. If approved, the three-year waiver would cover the 2026-27 through 2028-29 school years, allowing Northville to schedule instruction before Labor Day each fall without reapplying annually.
