Jake Moody, the former Northville High School kicker who became Michigan's all-time leading scorer, has been released by the Washington Commanders after losing a training camp battle to undrafted rookie Drew Stevens.

The Commanders informed Moody of the decision Monday, Aug. 17, with the move expected to become official Tuesday, Aug. 18, according to The Athletic and a person with knowledge of the decision who spoke to the Associated Press. Jordan Schultz first reported the release.

Moody, 26, had signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract with Washington in March 2026 after a strong six-game audition to close the 2025 season, during which he made 10 of 11 field-goal attempts. But his training camp numbers told a different story: 36-for-47 overall in practice, per The Athletic, including a late slide that Commanders radio host Grant Paulsen documented as 11 misses over four sessions.

Stevens won out.

The 22-year-old Iowa product, who set Hawkeyes records for career field goals (76) and longest make (58 yards), was 43-for-48 in camp practices and drilled a 41-yarder in the preseason opener against the Dolphins. Moody's lone attempt in that game, a 29-yarder, doinked off the upright before going in.

"What the most important thing is gonna be is who's making the kicks," Commanders special teams coordinator Larry Izzo said in June 2026 as the competition heated up.

Stevens becomes the 20th kicker to sign with Washington since 2020 and the eighth to play in a regular-season game for the franchise in the last two years, a revolving door that underscores how difficult the position has been to stabilize.

Moody grew up in the Northville area and starred at Northville High School in both football and baseball before committing to Michigan. He won the 2021 Lou Groza Award as the nation's top kicker, finished with 355 career points to set the Wolverines' all-time scoring record and was drafted in the third round (99th overall) by the San Francisco 49ers in 2023. He appeared in Super Bowl LVIII with San Francisco, hitting a then-record 55-yard field goal.

No public statement from Moody was available as of Tuesday, Aug. 18.

The Commanders play their next preseason game Saturday, Aug. 22, at the Detroit Lions at noon, then visit the Baltimore Ravens on Friday, Aug. 28, at 6 p.m. before the regular season opens Wednesday, Sept. 9.
