Novi residents who get a text message claiming to be from the “Michigan DMV” should not click the link.

The 52-1 District Court in Novi posted a warning on its Oakland County website about what it called active text scams impersonating the “Michigan DMV.” Michigan's driver and vehicle services are actually handled by the Secretary of State. The messages ask recipients to click a link and submit payment.

The court said on its website that it will never solicit payment through a link in a text message. Residents who owe fines or fees should use the court's official payment portal at etickets.oakgov.com instead.

The warning did not say how many people in the Novi area have received the fraudulent texts or how long the scam has been circulating. The court described the scam only as "active."

In March 2025, the Northville Township Police Department warned residents about a separate scam involving text messages falsely claiming recipients owed toll road payments. Police advised residents not to click the payment links.

Court closed Nov. 5

The 52-1 District Court also announced it will close to the public on Thursday, Nov. 5. The notice did not give a reason for the closure.

The courthouse sits at 48150 Grand River Ave. in Novi. The court accepts appearances only by fax or email. All other pleadings must be mailed or hand-delivered to that address, except filings subject to the court's electronic filing requirements.

Civil and landlord-tenant filings go through the state's MiFILE electronic filing system. Residents who need a MiFILE account can sign up for free on that site.

Hearings are proceeding both in person and by remote technology. The court's website advises anyone with questions about a specific case format to contact the court directly.

Residents who believe they have received a scam text can reach the Novi Police Department at 248-348-7100.
