Drivers heading north on Novi Road between 8 Mile and 9 Mile roads face a full closure as of Aug. 14, but the end is approaching: the contractor hopes to reopen the road before school starts, with a projected completion in September.
The Road Commission for Oakland County began the reconstruction March 30, tearing up pavement to add a continuous center left-turn lane, two northbound lanes and one southbound lane between the Rouge River/Allen Drive and 9 Mile Road, plus drainage improvements and ADA-compliant crosswalks. Underground utility obstructions slowed progress in early June, but those were cleared by July 8, and crews shifted to the northbound side of the road.
Southbound Novi Road remains open for residential and business access. Northbound traffic detours east on 8 Mile Road to Beck Road, north to 10 Mile Road and back south to Novi Road.
12 Mile Road work runs to mid-November
The 12 Mile Road project between Novi Road and Farmington Road launched its Novi segment Aug. 3. That work is active, with one lane maintained in each direction.
The Road Commission for Oakland County says Phase 1, which spans Drake Road to Farmington Road and Novi Road to Haggerty Road, is expected to wrap by mid-November. The scope includes pavement removal, asphalt repaving, concrete patching on 12 Mile west of M-5 to Novi Road, ADA crosswalks, pedestrian signals, SMART bus stop upgrades and curb and gutter repairs. The corridor carries 28,000 to 30,000 vehicles daily, according to RCOC.
The approximately $12 million project is funded by federal dollars and contributions from RCOC, Farmington Hills, Novi and Oakland County through the Tri-Party Program. Cadillac Asphalt of Farmington Hills is the contractor.
Phase 2, covering Haggerty Road to Drake Road, is scheduled to begin in spring 2027.
Timelines converge on late summer
The City of Novi's project page lists September 2026 as the projected end for the Novi Road work. The Oakland Press Road Watch published Aug. 13 describes the timeline as "late summer." Both are consistent with the contractor's goal of reopening before the school year begins.
