Drivers on 12 Mile Road in Novi and Farmington Hills face lane restrictions as Phase 1 road improvements continue between Novi Road and Farmington Road.

The Road Commission for Oakland County lists late fall as the overall Phase 1 completion target. An Oct. 14 update on Novi’s project tracker said the contractor expected work within Novi to finish in about two weeks.

RCOC is overseeing the two-year project, with Cadillac Asphalt handling construction. Phase 1 covers two sections: Drake Road to Farmington Road, where work started July 13, and Novi Road to Haggerty Road, where work began Aug. 12, according to the road commission’s project page.

The agency’s construction plan calls for keeping one lane open in each direction and maintaining access to homes and businesses.

Restrictions beginning Oct. 12 prevent drivers on Drake Road from continuing straight across 12 Mile Road.

Northbound Drake drivers must turn east onto 12 Mile, use an open crossover to reach westbound 12 Mile, then turn north onto Drake. Southbound drivers must turn west onto 12 Mile, use an open crossover to reach eastbound 12 Mile, then continue south on Drake.

What the project includes

Crews are patching concrete between Novi Road and a point west of M-5. From there to Farmington Road, the project includes removing the asphalt surface and repaving.

Other improvements include curb and gutter repairs, accessible crosswalks with pedestrian signals, SMART bus stop upgrades and pedestrian-crossing beacons at White Plains Drive.

Utility relocation is scheduled during the 2026 and 2027 construction seasons.

Cost and funding

RCOC lists an approximately $12.2 million project covering 5.5 miles. Novi’s tracker lists approximately $9 million and five miles. The pages do not explain the difference.

Both identify federal funding and contributions from RCOC, Farmington Hills, Novi and Oakland County through its Tri-Party Program.

What comes next

Phase 2 will cover 12 Mile between Haggerty and Drake roads in 2027. RCOC’s project page lists its start and completion dates as to be announced.

Novi cautions that construction schedules can change because of weather or other circumstances. Residents can check the RCOC project page for updates or email [email protected] with questions.
