Oakland County residents are being targeted by scams involving fake jury duty warrants, fraudulent Marketplace listings, financial schemes and bogus computer security alerts, according to an Aug. 21 warning from the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office said it will never call residents and demand money to resolve a warrant. Residents should be suspicious of urgent requests involving gift cards, cryptocurrency or instructions to immediately move money.

“Scammers are targeting Oakland County residents using fake jury duty warrants, fraudulent Marketplace listings, financial scams and bogus computer security alerts,” the sheriff’s office said in its Aug. 21 post. “When in doubt, stop and verify before you pay.”

Northville Township police have issued similar warnings. In a 2024 case, a resident lost nearly $300,000 in cash and Bitcoin to scammers impersonating law enforcement, according to the Northville Township Police Department.

For Marketplace transactions, the Novi Police Department offers camera-monitored, well-lit spaces at its station for buyers and sellers, according to the City of Novi.

Residents who receive suspicious calls, texts or computer alerts should stop, verify the claim independently and avoid sending money until they know the request is legitimate.
