Unbeaten Northville puts its perfect record on the line Friday, Sept. 25, when the Mustangs visit Plymouth for a 7 p.m. KLAA Black Division game with conference-title implications.

The Mustangs (4-0, 3-0 KLAA Black) sit atop the division standings, according to MaxPreps. Plymouth (3-1, 2-0 KLAA Black) is tied for second with Hartland and riding its best start since 2019 under first-year head coach Matt Penn.

Northville has won four games four different ways. A 38-31 double-overtime thriller over Lake Orion opened the season Aug. 27. A 10-7 win over Canton followed Sept. 3. Then a 35-34 victory over Brighton on Sept. 11, sealed when the Mustangs defended a two-point conversion with less than a minute left, according to The Oakland Press. Head coach Brent Luplow's squad capped the run with a 52-7 rout of Novi on Sept. 18.

Senior running back Danny O'Neil has powered the ground game. O'Neil rushed for 315 yards through the first three games, per a Detroit News feature, and scored three touchdowns in the Brighton win alone. He is the son of Detroit Lions safeties coach Jim O'Neil. Receiver Cassius Montgomery, son of Lions associate head coach Scottie Montgomery, threw a trick-play touchdown and caught a scoring pass in the Lake Orion opener.

"We're proud of them … They have worked really hard," Scottie Montgomery said in a Sept. 8 Detroit News interview. "They're a part of a football family, they know the negatives that comes with it, they know the positives that comes with it."

Plymouth presents a different challenge. The Wildcats beat Canton 24-20 on Sept. 18, with quarterback Cullen Dixon completing 11 of 23 passes for 119 yards and running for 40 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Xavier Williams carried 28 times for 90 yards, according to Social House News.

The Oakland Press ranked Northville No. 7 in Oakland County after Week 4, and the Detroit Free Press slotted the Mustangs at No. 9 in Division 1 after Week 3. The Oakland Press noted that wins over Plymouth and Dearborn Fordson in the next two weeks could set up a game at Belleville to decide the KLAA Black.

Kickoff is 7 p.m. Friday at Plymouth. The Mustangs host Dearborn Fordson the following week.
