Northville's football program opens the 2026 season against Lake Orion on Thursday, Aug. 27, at 7 p.m. at Northville High School, and the Mustangs will look dramatically different from the squad that went 7-2 last fall.

Six of Northville's seven All-KLAA selections from 2025 have graduated, including running back Max DeFore, wide receiver Kamden Brown, offensive linemen Anthony Testani and Nolan Toomey, defensive back Austin McGarrow and linebacker Robbie Kehoe. The departures leave head coach Brent Luplow with a roster full of players who have yet to prove themselves at the varsity level.

The turnover is massive.

The biggest question mark is also the biggest reason for optimism. Senior quarterback Brayden Tuiasosopo takes over the offense full-time after Luplow moved then-starter Cooper Derkach to cornerback late in the 2025 season. Tuiasosopo flashed his potential immediately, rushing for 117 yards and two touchdowns against Franklin in Week 9. He drew Division I interest as a junior, visiting Toledo and Washington State in September 2025.

Up front, offensive lineman Parker Laney earned honorable mention on the Detroit Free Press list of Michigan's top offensive linemen for 2026, giving Tuiasosopo at least one proven blocker. Kicker Alex Baird also returns after a sophomore season that included field goals of 29 and 37 yards and 711 total kicking yards in a 55-9 rout of Hartland.

The Free Press framed the Mustangs' situation in a Wednesday, Aug. 5, preview headlined "Why Northville football having no names isn't necessarily a bad thing," suggesting the program's depth of inexperience could become a strength as new contributors emerge.

Lake Orion, an Oakland Activities Association program, visits for what Patch described as a closely watched Week 1 matchup that renews a recent back-and-forth series between the two programs. The non-conference game gives both teams a measuring-stick opportunity before league play begins.

The stakes extend beyond Week 1. This is Northville's final season in the Kensington Lakes Activities Association before the Mustangs and Novi join the OAA in 2027, according to Northville Public Schools. Every game this fall doubles as an audition for the higher-profile conference schedule ahead.

MHSAA fall practices begin Monday, Aug. 10, with Northville hosting a preseason scrimmage against Heritage (Saginaw) on Thursday, Aug. 20, at 11 a.m. before the Lake Orion opener. After the Aug. 27 kickoff, the Mustangs travel to Canton for their first KLAA conference game on Thursday, Sept. 3, at 7 p.m.
