Two Oakland County state house races are locked in for the Nov. 3 general election, including one directly covering Novi and Northville.
Oakland County published its official candidate list Friday, Sept. 4, confirming the matchups in the 21st and 19th Michigan House districts.
21st District: Breen vs. Barranco
In the 21st District, which covers Novi, Farmington and parts of Farmington Hills, Lyon Township and Northville, incumbent state Rep. Kelly Breen, a Novi Democrat, faces Republican Ross Barranco, also of Novi. The seat carries a two-year term and an annual salary of $71,685, according to C&G Newspapers.
The Oakland County 115 reported in July that Breen is seeking another term representing the district. Barranco filed his candidacy fee on April 2, according to the county list.
19th District: Steckloff vs. Hammer
The 19th District, centered in Farmington Hills, is holding a rematch. Incumbent state Rep. Samantha Steckloff, a Farmington Hills Democrat seeking a third term, again faces Republican Kevin J. Hammer of Farmington Hills, according to the county list.
Steckloff beat Hammer in the November 2024 general election, 65.3% to 34.7%, collecting 36,538 votes to Hammer's 19,431, according to Ballotpedia.
Both cleared competitive Aug. 4 primaries, according to preliminary Ballotpedia data. Steckloff defeated Brandon Young with 71.5% of the Democratic vote, winning 10,206 votes to Young's 4,071. Hammer took the Republican primary with 65.6%, earning 2,853 votes over Mitch Swoboda's 1,496.
Steckloff previously served on the Farmington Hills City Council and as mayor pro tem, according to her legislative biography. Her mother, Vicki Barnett, is a former Farmington Hills mayor and state representative. Hammer's campaign platform was not found in public records as of Sept. 7.
Key dates for voters
Absentee ballots become available Sept. 24. Michigan's constitutionally mandated early voting period runs Oct. 24 through Nov. 1. Polls on Election Day, Nov. 3, are open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., according to Michigan Advance.
