A Western Wayne County women's philanthropy group that has funneled more than $220,000 to local nonprofits over two decades counts at least two Northville organizations among its grant recipients.

Giving Hope, Women's Giving Circle hits its 20th anniversary in 2026. The organization was founded in 2006 when 13 women who pooled their charitable giving rallied about 65 founding members to launch the circle, and it has awarded grants every year since, according to a Canton Public Library "Know Your Org" feature published Saturday, Aug. 1.

"Over the last 20 years, we've given over $220,000 in grants," said Karen Hanchett, the group's chair, in the library spotlight.

Northville connections

The circle's grant history includes the Living and Learning Enrichment Center, a Northville nonprofit serving individuals with disabilities. That grant funded equipment and supplies to expand the center's product-making program to include bath and body products, according to the Local Impact Alliance grants page. The center's own 2024 Gratitude Report lists Giving Hope among its donors.

New Hope Center for Grief Support, located at 133 W. Main St. in Northville, also received a Giving Hope grant to expand its crisis outreach program in response to increased incidents of suicide, overdoses and COVID-19 deaths.

Where the money goes

Giving Hope targets smaller organizations that might not attract large foundation dollars. Grant areas include literacy programs, domestic violence shelters, food and clothing for school children, preschool for low-income families, library support and mental health services. Applicants must request a specific dollar amount for a specific purpose and must serve women and families in Western Wayne County.

In its most recent cycle, the circle awarded $13,000 across five recipients:

  • Salvation Army — $2,000 for summer day camp scholarships
  • A school radio station — $2,000 for equipment upgrades
  • New Day Foundation — $3,000 to help families fill financial gaps during cancer care
  • Growth Works — $3,000 for a family stability program serving youth in the juvenile justice system
  • St. Vincent DePaul — $3,000 for its homeless program

In 2026, the circle has approximately $15,000 available to distribute. The grant window opens each March and closes in mid-April, with awards made in early summer. Local Impact Alliance, the Canton-based parent organization, vets applications.

Events and membership

Giving Hope holds four events each year: a Winter Social, Spring Charity Event, Summer Social and Fall Annual Meeting. Non-members are welcome.

The group's 20th Anniversary Celebration is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 21, alongside its annual business meeting. An Annual Dixboro Event follows on Wednesday, Dec. 2.
