Detroit Catholic Central quarterback Duke Banta left the Saturday, Oct. 3, Boys' Bowl with an arm injury and was taken to the hospital for X-rays. His status is uncertain as the 6-0 Shamrocks enter the final three regular-season weeks before the MHSAA playoffs.
Banta went down in the second quarter of DCC's 31-12 win over Toledo Central Catholic at Father Elmer Stadium in Novi. On a broken play, the 6-foot-4 senior scrambled 9 yards toward the sideline and landed on his arm on the tackle. He did not move his arm afterward and walked off the field with trainers, the Detroit News reported.
"He is going to go to the hospital and get an X-ray," head coach Justin Cessante said after the game. "Not sure if it is his wrist or shoulder."
No diagnosis or return timeline was publicly available as of Monday, Oct. 5.
Before the injury, Banta had staked DCC to a 14-0 first-quarter lead. He scored on a quarterback sneak, then connected with Gideon Gash on a 21-yard touchdown pass.
Senior Peyton Sofran, normally a starting wide receiver, replaced Banta under center. Cessante said the team rallied around Sofran, calling him a player who "has his own tools and played quarterback a lot in his life." Sofran threw a touchdown pass to Gash late in the third quarter. Gash finished with three touchdowns, adding a 65-yard punt return.
Sofran is listed as a WR/QB on DCC's roster. The 6-foot-1, 175-pound senior from Beverly Hills is in his fourth season with the program, third on varsity. He is committed to play lacrosse at Queen's University of Charlotte.
The stakes are high. DCC's winning streak now stands at 20 games. The Shamrocks won the 2025 MHSAA Division 1 state championship at Ford Field, beating Detroit Cass Tech 42-19 on Nov. 30, 2025. Banta went 9-for-11 for 156 yards and three touchdowns in that title game.
The Detroit Free Press ranked DCC No. 2 overall in its Super 25 after Week 6, behind No. 1 Cass Tech. Both schools compete in Division 1.
Banta, who holds 12 Division 1 college offers according to his social media profile, is planning to graduate in December and enroll early at his eventual college to participate in spring practice, the Detroit Free Press reported in August.
The MHSAA playoffs begin on Halloween weekend. DCC has three regular-season games to sort out its quarterback situation before then.
