Families enrolled in WIC can now use their benefits to order groceries online at Meijer, choosing curbside pickup or free home delivery at the Northville and Novi locations instead of navigating store aisles with a WIC-approved shopping list.
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services announced Sunday, Aug. 2 that Meijer is the first retailer in the state to accept WIC benefits for online grocery orders. The change applies to all 122 Michigan Meijer stores, including the Northville location at 20401 Haggerty Rd. and the Novi store at 44900 Grand River Ave.
The program works through a split-cart checkout: shoppers pay for WIC-eligible foods with their WIC card and cover non-WIC items with a second payment method in the same transaction. Delivery is free.
"As a family-owned company, Meijer understands how important it is to make shopping for healthy, everyday foods easy for all families," Don Sanderson, Meijer's chief merchandising and marketing officer, said in the announcement. "We are proud to be the first retailer to offer this in Michigan."
MDHHS Acting Director Amy Epkey said the online option builds on existing in-store WIC acceptance at Meijer and will make it easier for families to buy healthy foods. Michigan WIC Director Christina Herring said the service will let WIC families access healthy foods more quickly while juggling the demands of everyday life.
Who qualifies
Michigan's WIC program serves more than 187,000 women, infants and children each month statewide. In Oakland County alone, WIC reaches an average of 11,300 participants monthly and distributed nearly $10.3 million in food benefits in 2025.
Under income guidelines updated June 1, a family of four can qualify with an annual gross income of $61,050 or less. Monthly food packages range from $70 to $250 depending on family size and life stage. Oakland County residents with eligibility questions can call 248-858-1272.
What's next
The state plans to expand online WIC shopping to additional retailers, though MDHHS has not named which stores or set a timeline. The initiative was funded by a 2023 federal WIC Modernization Grant and built in partnership with eWIC processor Fidelity National Information Services.
