Gorman's Home Furnishings & Interior Design will concentrate its entire retail operation at its Novi Road showroom after closing its Southfield and Troy locations, the 86-year-old furniture company announced Monday, July 27.

The two closing stores, at 29145 Telegraph Road in Southfield and 1465 W. Big Beaver Road in Troy, will wrap up regular business on Monday, August 3, according to the Detroit News and the company's own announcement. After a temporary closure for inventory tagging, a private sale for invited past customers runs Thursday, August 13, and Friday, August 14. A public store-closing sale begins Saturday, August 15, with discounts expected to reach 80 percent.

The consolidation makes the showroom at 27800 Novi Road the company's sole full-line retail location and primary interior design destination.

"By concentrating our operation around Novi and Farmington Hills, we can continue serving customers throughout metro Detroit and Michigan while building a more focused foundation for the future," CEO Jonathan Moray said in the announcement.

Moray, who has been involved in the family business for more than 35 years, said the company plans to retain key employees and maintain current compensation where possible. The company has not disclosed how many workers are affected at the closing locations. LinkedIn lists Gorman's company size at 51 to 200 employees, but individual staffing decisions will be communicated directly to employees, the company said.

Gorman's Farmington Hills Three-Day Clearance Center and warehouse at 23231 Industrial Park Drive will also continue operating, handling clearance sales, deliveries, and customer service.

Customers with existing orders do not need to take immediate action unless contacted. Scheduled deliveries and active interior design projects will continue as planned.

Founded in 1940 by Ben Gorman as a railroad-damaged freight reseller in Detroit, the company was purchased by Bernie Moray in 1965 and expanded into a multi-showroom operation. The Southfield location opened in 1966 and the Troy store in 1977, making them roughly 60 and nearly 50 years old at the time of closing. Bernie Moray retired in 2020 after 55 years leading the company and passed away in 2021 at age 100.
