A $383.4 million state psychiatric hospital in Northville Township is scheduled to begin accepting patients at the end of October, according to The Detroit News. State officials dedicated the 264-bed facility on Haggerty Road on Wednesday, Oct. 7.

The Southeast Michigan Psychiatric Hospital replaces the Walter P. Reuther Psychiatric Hospital in Westland, which opened in 1979, and the former Hawthorn Center, and adds 54 beds to Michigan's state-run psychiatric hospital system, according to MDHHS information reported by WWJ Newsradio. It will be the state's only state-run psychiatric hospital providing inpatient services to children.

The 406,000-square-foot complex sits on the former Hawthorn Center grounds. It was built with state funds by the Christman Company and designed by Integrated Design Solutions LLC, according to MLive. The project was completed on schedule and under budget, according to acting MDHHS Director Amy Epkey, as reported by Michigan Advance.

The hospital can treat up to 192 adults and 72 youth in separate living areas. Patient rooms include 198 single-bed suites with private bathrooms and 33 double rooms. A fully equipped studio apartment allows adult patients to practice independent living skills, according to WWJ.

Hospital director Mary Clare Solky said at the dedication that the facility was built with patient recovery and staff safety in mind. "Every aspect of it has been made with how people can heal fast in mind and keep our patients safe and keep our staff safe," Solky said, as reported by The Detroit News.

The building features a gym, art rooms, sensory spaces, 12 secure outdoor courtyards, a nondenominational chapel, a music room, a hair salon and a patient clinic with dental and optometry suites. Adolescent patients will attend an on-site school with classrooms, a media center and workrooms. A horticulture program lets patients grow and harvest fruits and vegetables, according to Michigan Advance.

Interior walls display blue, orange, pink and purple indigenous flower designs. David Giroux, senior vice president at Integrated Design Solutions, said the landscaping, windows and lighting were chosen to connect patients with the outdoors, according to Michigan Advance.

The facility’s heating and cooling system uses 352 geothermal wells drilled 550 feet underground, a system WWJ Newsradio reported is expected to cut heating and cooling costs by about 40%. Andrew Miller, a project executive at the Christman Company, said the geothermal system will save at least $10,000 a month, according to Michigan Advance.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said the hospital will create 150 professional healthcare jobs, according to WWJ. Patients from the Reuther hospital in Westland will transfer to the new facility starting later in October, according to Michigan Advance. Solky said adolescents typically stay three to six months, while adults may stay a year or longer, according to Michigan Advance.
